Learning Isn’t Always in the Classroom

Everyday is a day of lessons in our house. It does not matter if it is a school day or not someone is learning something. This week the lessons that have been learned were not academic, but rather life lessons. My son came home this week to tell me all about his new friend at church. He told me that he and his new friend have so much in common. I was curious what all he was referring to. He told me that both he and his friend have people from the state who come by their house to check up on them to make sure they are safe. At this point I was intrigued. I inquired as to what else they had in common and he let me know that they have both had a rough couple of years.

It amazes me how kids are so resilient to what life throws at them. Adults who make bad decisions are sometimes removed from a child’s life for the child’s protection. Sometimes those bad decisions don’t stop there. These two friends have a bond that I will never understand. I was fortunate to be raised in a loving environment by parents and grandparents who loved and supported me. It is unfortunate that both these boys have faced struggles involving one of their parents making poor life choices.

I think the thing that got me the most was that my son made it a point to tell me that his new friend needs him. I think they both need each other.
